DMIN 550  Praxis Thesis Seminar

Korean DMIN track “Wesleyan Spirituality and Church Renewal”

October 2009

 

Instructors:        Young-Ho Chun and Robert K. Martin

 

This seminar prepares students to investigate, research, and write about their field project.  [Prerequisite: DMIN510] 1.5 semester credit hours

 

Course Learning Objectives

 

1.      To review the theoretical and methodological dimensions of the Praxis Thesis.

 

2.      To refine the area of research and construction into a model of ministry that contributes significantly to renewal in the Korean Methodist Church.

 

3.      To integrate theory (theology) and practice (ministry) by drafting specific parts of the Praxis Thesis and developing a strategic plan for completing the Praxis Thesis.

 

4.      To form a learning community to which students offer themselves and share collaboratively in a common vocation and work.

 

5.      To produce a focused question, hypothesis, and research trajectory for the Praxis Thesis.

 

6.      To produce satisfactory accounts of Practical Theology, Ecclesiology, and Methodology in the Praxis Thesis.

 

Required Texts

 

·         Bevans, Stephen. Models of Contextual Theology. Korean translation.

·         Swinton, John And Mowat, Harriet. Practical Theology And Qualitative Research. London: Scm Press, 2006.

·         Saint Paul School of Theology Handbook.

 

 

Course Requirements

·         Advance Assignment on separate sheet (35% of course grade)

·         Final Assignment: oral exam with professors (45% of course grade

·         Participation: attendance, involvement in class discussions, small group work, and presentations of writing during advance assignment sessions and regular class sessions. (20% of course grade)

 

Grading

 

The course is graded Credit (CR) or No Credit (NC). 

 

COURSE POLICIES

READING: Class members are expected to have completed all readings by the class session for which they are assigned. The right to participate in class discussion is based on having read the assigned texts for the session.

 

You are encouraged to submit all written work as an email attachment. They are due by midnight unless otherwise indicated. Earlier, however, is better. I will return it to you with comments in the same format. [If you would rather I did not comment on the paper, please let me know.] Note: I will reply to your submission to let you know that I received it. If you don’t hear from me within a day, assume that I did not receive it. Contact me or resend the original ‘sent’ email with the attachment. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure that I have your paper.

 

Late papers (for whatever reason) are automatically given a somewhat lower grade.

 

Criteria for Expressive Assignments:

a)   Is your expression coherent? Are there well-formed ideas? Do the ideas flow logically?

b)  Is your expression informed? Does it reveal ability to appropriate issues and information from presentations, readings, discussions, and observations?

c)            Is your expression thoughtful? Does it reveal an ability to think carefully and critically about issues and information?

d)           Is your expression constructive? Does it reveal an ability to think creatively and practically?

e)            Does your expression have integrity, making proper attribution when other sources are used?

f)    Praxis: does the assignment demonstrate an ability to relate ecclesiology to situations creatively, constructively, and critically.
